Who Are You? Salt and Light

August Sermon Series.png

Read Matthew 5:13-16. Jesus moves in these verses from the Beatitudes to the Christians’ influence on the world by using the metaphor of salt. Think about life in the first century and all the ways in which salt would have been used.

Read Matthew 5:13. How does real salt lose its taste? What is the answer to the question,”How can salt ever become salty again?” Is there any use at all for salt that has lost its saltiness?

What are some practical ways we can function as salt where we live and work?

Read Matthew 5:14-16. Jesus’ second statement is “You are the light of the world” ( verse 14). How does the church’s role as light compliment its role as salt?

Why might we be tempted to hide our light as mentioned in Matthew 5:15?

Going Further:

Read Matt. 5:13-16; John 8:12, 9:5. We read in these two texts that Jesus is the light of the world.  We also read that we, as followers of Jesus, are called to be light in the world.  Where do we get the light that we are to let shine (5:15)? In what ways are we the light of the world?
