Uncertainty and the Desire to Be in Control

Matthew 6:34; Proverbs 3:5-6; Genesis 16:1-4; Luke 10:41-42; Revelation 21:1-4

 Reflection Questions

1.    Read Matthew 6:34: Pastor Lonnie said, “You can plan for tomorrow—You can’t plan tomorrow.” In what ways are you personally afraid of the uncertain future? In what ways do you demonstrate a desire to control that future?

2.    What is it about uncertainty that is so hard to accept? Likewise, why do you think the desire to be in control is so often a struggle? Is it hard for you let others control situations where you think you would handle the situation differently and/or better?

3.    Read Proverbs 3:5-6: Why is it sometimes hard to trust God in all areas of your life—especially the areas beyond your control?

4.    Read Revelation 21:1-4: What confidence and hope do these words give you when dealing with the issues of uncertainty and control? What about the promise of God’s ultimate future is helpful?

 Going Further

Think about a time when uncertainty led to you trying to take control of an uncontrollable situation. How did that turn out? What lessons did you learn from it? How can you better trust God in those situations going forward? How can you better discern if the situation is even controllable or not?
