About Us

Who is Assurance United Methodist Church?

Assurance is a church that loves, nurtures and cares by connecting and reconnecting everyone to God and to each other, making God’s love real!

In 1995 Chadwick United Methodist Church and St. James United Methodist Church merged to form Assurance United Methodist Church with the goal to serve the growing area of northwest Mecklenburg County.

Upon the completion of our new building in 1999, we moved to our current facility at 9700 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road. There has been explosive growth within the community and at Assurance. In 2007 we opened an educational wing to further serve the needs of our congregation and our community. Assurance now averages 400 people each Sunday in two worship services. Assurance is large enough to offer an amazing variety of programs and activities, but small enough to feel that you are with family.

Our church community seeks to connect an Old and Living Word with a New and Present Time. We are an intergenerational church, which shapes our identity and beliefs. As we reach out and serve the surrounding community and our world, we hope you will join us as we continue to be a growing spiritual center in northwest Mecklenburg County.

What is Methodist?

300 years ago John Wesley, a priest in the Church of England, believed that church shouldn’t just be something that one does on Sunday morning, but that it should be an experience of faith. He started small groups of “Holy Clubs” that:

  • Prayed
  • Helped the poor
  • Visit the Sick and those in prison
  • Taking Communion
  • Bible Study
  • Personal devotion to God

These groups were “methodical” in their faithfulness and became to be called “Methodists.” These small groups that were started to help inspire the faith of its participants have grown into one of the largest Protestant Denominations in the United States with churches and ministries worldwide.

United Methodist Church:
“Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors”

We are a church that for 300 years has found its place between traditional and contemporary, between religion of the head and of the heart, and between talking about God and doing the work of God. We believe that God's love and forgiveness comes to us through Jesus Christ and what he did on a cross so long ago. God loves us everyday as he gives us gifts in life that help draw us closer to one another and to Him. We celebrate God and invite you to the celebration.

What We Believe

The Apostles’ Creed is our basic affirmation of Christianity. Affirmations help us come to our own understanding of our faith through exploration and questioning in an open and loving environment.

The Apostles' Creed (ca. AD 215)

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church*, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN.
*“holy catholic church” in the Apostles' Creed means the one universal Church of Christ. The word "catholic" as used here means "universal." It is not a reference to the Catholic Church.
